The art of the tattoo has a long, detailed cultural history. You can learn about the stories, myths, facts, legends, and development of the art at Black Anchor Tattoo in Denton. In addition to being a professional tattoo parlor, Black Anchor is a museum of tattooing.
"Krooked" Ken Motter and "Keelhauled Mike" are tattoo historians with encyclopedic knowledge of the art, particularly its influence on Indonesian and Japanese culture and its development in the US. From its often negative image, tattoos are now a popular art form.
Vintage and historic memorabilia, photos, and artifacts are on display at the studio. Tattoo designs are an art form in their own right. A separate gallery of designs as 2-D art showcases the styles and techniques as wall hangings and Japanese scrolls.
Black Anchor Tattoo is at 211 Market St., Denton. Mon-Thurs 10-8, Fri-Sat 10-9, Sun 12-6. 410-479-9316. www.blackanchortattoo.com
